Build a Pallet Coffee Table with Hairpin Legs
Turn an old pallet into a modern coffee table with hairpin legs. It’s a fast, low-cost project that takes about an hour and adds storage and industrial style to any living room.
Supplies:
- pallet
- saw
- hammer
- pry bar (or you can use the back of your hammer)
- drill
- set of four 12 or 14-inch hairpin table legs (available from several online retailers)
- clear varnish
- paintbrush
Step 1: Clean and Resize the Pallet
Start by cleaning your pallet and cutting it down to your preferred dimensions. If it’s already the right size for a coffee table, you can skip the cutting step.
Step 2: Adjust the Slats
Check the spacing of the pallet slats. If they’re too far apart, remove slats from extra sections and reposition them to close gaps. Use a hammer and pry bar to gently remove slats, being careful not to break the wood if it’s dry.
Step 3: Reinforce the Bottom
To prepare for attaching legs, add two wooden slats underneath—one at each end of the pallet. These reinforcements will provide solid anchor points for the hairpin legs.
Step 4: Attach the Hairpin Legs
Position each leg at a corner and pre-drill holes for the screws. Then securely attach the legs using a drill and screws. Make sure they’re all aligned evenly.
Step 5: Seal the Wood
Apply one or two coats of clear varnish using a paintbrush. Let it dry thoroughly. You can choose to sand the surface smooth or leave it a bit rough for a raw, industrial feel.
